Pope Francis, at 88 years old, has been released from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after being treated for some severe respiratory infections such as bronchitis and double pneumonia for 38 days. This was the longest Pope Francis has had to be hospitalized for since becoming a pope in 2013.
Hospitalization and Treatment
When admitted on February 14, 2025, he was suffering from bronchitis which further developed into double pneumonia. While he was hospitalized, the Pope suffered two severe respiratory emergencies which required extensive medical support. He remained aware during the treatment and was able to do some of his work as a pope through video conferencing.
Public Appearance and Discharge
Before being discharged on March 23, Pope Francis made a short appearance to the public while on a hospital balcony. While sitting in a wheelchair and wearing a nasal oxygen tube, he thanked the people who came to support him through prayers during his hospitalization.
Return to the Vatican and Recovery
The Pope’s first stop was back at the Vatican where he will complete his recovery in Casa Santa Marta.
The doctors have suggested a recovery period involving two months of complete rest along with rehabilitation and convalescence while advising him against attending group meetings and public engagements for the foreseen duration.
Effects on Papal Responsibilities and Future Activities
While the Pope was hospitalized for extended periods of time, his recovery has raised concerns regarding his ability to fulfill his rigorous schedule. He is also uncertain if he will have an audience with King Charles and Queen Camilla in April. Officials in the Vatican have expressed that the Pope’s primary concern should be his health and that he should be slowly weaned off his workload for full recovery.
Public Diplomacy and Other International Issues
The Pope’s health has been a matter of concern for the global Catholic world and international leaders who have publicly prayed and hoped for his speedy recovery. Even during his hospitalization, Pope Francis continued playing his papal responsibilities by calling for peace in conflict areas like Gaza and Ukraine which show his commitment even with his health issues.
Final Thoughts
The health scare that Pope Francis recently faced sheds more light onto the physical expectations set on religious leaders around the world and their coping mechanisms as far as taking care of their health is concerned.
As he recuperates, the Vatican and the rest of the Catholic Church hopes for his improved health, while conceding the need to manage his workload and rehabilitation activities.
